Summer Book Study: The Emancipation of Evan Walls

Public·26 members

Let's get started!

This week, we are reading the Prologue and chapters 1 and 2 (pp. 1-69).

Here are a few questions for reflection. Join in the conversation!

Week 1

Discuss Evan’s reaction to his daughter’s birth (prologue).

Discuss the impact of Evan’s giftedness.

What are your thoughts/reactions/interpretations about the “Porch Discussions”?

React to this quote on p. 27: “Everybody simply stared. Bojack took his seat and the session fell silent. I figured that they had come to the painful conclusion that Bojack might be right. But he was trying to kick their only significant crunch out from under them…”

I am really enjoying reading this book. The first 2 chapters gave such insight into Evan's upbringing and what his parents endured. He knows that he wants and deserves better. Others can't see it because they've been held down and pulled back for so long. Even his peers don't realize they deserve better because of the atmosphere they're in at home. Bojack is such a character. He speaks for all the oppressed who are "tired" of the same thing. The porch discussions paint such a vivid picture...I can see all of them now, sipping on their cold drink, some smoking, some eating and everyone complaining. Bravo for Evan for speaking up! I know I couldn't have done it.
