Summer Book Study: The Emancipation of Evan Walls

Public·27 members

Let's keep the discussion going!

For week three, July 15th-21st , read Chapters 8-11 (pp. 137-202) and consider the following questions:

* Discuss the impact of Evan’s giftedness.

* Agree or disagree: All of Evan’s relationships have contingencies.

* At this point in the book, how have the “porch discussions” evolved?

* What role do traditions play in the book?

During these chapters, my heart broke for Evan. Because of his giftedness, he lost his family and friends and these chapters really dug deep into his isolation. When he was in the hospital his parents did not come to see him because they were more worried about their image than supporting their child. The contempt they held for him was beyond my comprehension. Mama Jennie was there though! Bojack could not see Evan anymore because his wife forbid it. His support of Evan through football and the connection they shared was severed. Lastly, Mama Jennie took her last breath. "I looked deeply into her eyes. I took a snapshot for my mind and heart. Even today, I can see her exactly as she was right before I kissed her for the last time" (p. 202). I felt his pain and love. I wept for Evan for all his losses in these chapters.
