Awards & Scholarships
Each year, the North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of gifted education. The 2011 Awards and Scholarships will be presented during the luncheons at the conference on both days: March 17th and 18th, 2011.



Distinguished Service Award
This award is considered a lifetime achievement award.  It is presented to an individual who is an educator and who has made the most significant contribution to the field of gifted education through a fruitful association with NCAGT.  Past recipients may not be re-nominated for this award.  Current, sitting members of the NCAGT Board of Directors are not eligible for this award.

Special Award
This award is presented to an individual who is not an educator and who has made the most significant contribution to the field of gifted education.  This award is presented when appropriate and at the discretion of the Board.  It is not an annual award.  Past recipients may not be re-nominated for this award.

Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award (NAGC)
This award program is designed to recognize distinguished achievement in academic, leadership, or the arts, of children in grades 3 through 6. NAGC believes that this award inspires children to achieve to their fullest potential, highlights high-ability students, and draw attention to the educational needs of our nation’s gifted and talented students. One child per sate can be named a Nicholas Green Distinguished Student and that winner receives a $500 U.S. savings bond and an NAGC Certificate of Excellence. Eligible students may be nominated by parents, teachers, students or community/civic groups. Applications for nominees from North Carolina will be reviewed by a committee of NCAGT Board members that will make a final selection to be sent to NAGC for certification.

Student Scholarship Awards
These awards are presented to K-12 students who currently qualify as academically and/or intellectually gifted according to local guidelines. A current member of NCAGT or PAGE must sponsor each applicant. The amount and number of scholarships shall be decided annually at the initial budget planning session of the NCAGT Board.

Outstanding Teacher of the Gifted Award
This award is presented to teachers of gifted children/youth who exhibit a strong commitment to gifted education through professional experiences, professional organizations, and service in the area of gifted education. The nominee must be endorsed by the state of North Carolina to teach gifted students and must currently be teaching with at least three years of teaching experience. (This may include regular classroom teachers, consultation teachers, or AIG teachers.) Nominees must be members of NCAGT. Each school district is eligible to nominate one candidate from its system for the NC Gifted Teacher of the Year. Nominees may not have previously been winners of NCAGT’s Outstanding Teacher Award before. Only one nominee will be selected as the NCAGT Outstanding Teacher of the Year.

Outstanding Administrator of the Gifted Award
This award is presented to administrators (superintendent, assistant superintendent, coordinator of gifted, director of exceptional children’s programs, principals or supervisors) who have been an advocates and leaders in support of gifted children/youth. The nominee must exhibit outstanding qualities related to gifted education in areas of teaching, curriculum development and adaptations, working with gifted children/youth, working with parents, participating in PAGE activities where applicable, and dealing with other staff and administrators. Each school district is eligible to nominate one candidate from its system for the NC Gifted Administrator of the Year. Only one nominee will be selected as NCAGT Outstanding Administrator of the Year.

Lyn Aubrecht Parent of the Year Award
This award is presented to a parent of a gifted child, whose primary involvement is in the role of a parent. The nominee must have worked to promote the needs of gifted children for at least four years. In addition, the nominee should demonstrate other characteristics which indicate depth of commitment to the education of gifted children, such as membership in and/or leadership of a PAGE Chapter, participation in local education committees, and being informed concerning issues in gifted education.

PAGE Chapter Award
PAGE Chapters are invited to complete a one-page summary of activities and accomplishments of their chapter over the last school year. Such accomplishments might include contributions to the well-being of local programs for gifted students, informative programs for parents and teachers, direct services to students. PAGE Chapters must have worked to promote the needs of gifted children for at least four years. PAGE Chapters should demonstrate adherence to the standards set forth by NCAGT.

Susan Keel Lamar Student Scholar for Creativity Award
This award is presented to a student who demonstrates distinguished achievement in the arts (visual or performing) in grades K through 12. Current members of NCAGT or PAGE must sponsor each applicant. One student can be named the Susan Keel Lamar Scholar for Creativity. The winner will receive a $250.00 U. S Savings Bond and a NCAGT certificate of Excellence.
